We have recently been given a clarinet marked "Henry Gunkel" and we are interested in any information about this brand. Thanks for any help anyone might give!

Camen:

I am not familiar with such an instrument. I would suggest that you take it to a locak music dealer or repairman to see if they might be able to get some information on the instrument. To my limited knowledge it is not a prominient brand, but could be an instrument made by a prominent manufacturer for sale under a private brand name. This does happen occasion ally. Unless you get another answer to your question this would be my recommendation.

Hi, Carmen -

You don't mention what model, Boehm or Albert system, serial number or... ?
Henry Gunkel is a known instrument maker and may have made other horn besides clarinets. I haven't have the urge to persue information about that.

I own a Gunkel, an Albert system. It's a no frills model instrument, pretty standard; has roller pinkey keys but no additional alternates. I have no idea how old it is but the wood is in good shape. I overhauled it a couple of years ago and it's in pretty fair shape now, though it hasn't had much use since I fixed it. It's a good instrument, plays well, intonation is 'all right'. I've used it occassionally when I needed a 'spare'. It's my 'emergency horn' :)

I loaned it out a while back to a friend while fixing her Albert horn. I'm guessing it's working okay because she hasn't called to complain. It's seems like a nice, sturdy little instrument that will be playable for some years to come. I haven't heard anything negative about Henry Gunkel horns. In fact, I haven't heard much of anything about other Gunkel horns - period. My guess is that they're okay, run of the mill instruments. I see 'em on eBay once in a while.

Actually Gunkel was an importer, not a maker. See "Henry Gunkel Info" a couple of lines above this topic.

Hi, Mark -
I should know better than to write when I'm tired.
Thank you. Maybe that explains my notion that Gunkel was a maker. I've seen the name on other instruments.
Those would be 'stencil' horns ? They could have been made by anybody, anywhere... like Carl Fischer ? (Try before you buy :o)
I will, in the future, refer to Henri as a known *importer* :
Do you know if Gunkel is still in business ?
