Jim - that is a very elegant solution!
I did a similar thing with a Platt case from Jensen Tools. The supplied, cubed foam didn't meet my needs, but an upholstery company supplied a couple of layers of high-density foam. You can trim this with X-Acto knives, but an electric kitchen knife will do it quicker.
