Hi,
On the comparison chart, the tradition blue box is harder then V12 and V12 harder than rue56. But what I feel is the opposite. But this does not apply to rico reeds...
Do anyone know why?

For me they go sorta like this, Blue box, 56, V12....... in ascending order of strength. Of course the cut is different on all three making a direct comparison rather impractical. The 56 have a very long vamp making them more well suited for long lay mouthpiecese, but I've used them successfully on all types of mouthpieces. V12s are ideal (in my opinion) for those who have a need to really work on the reeds since they have a very thick stock.

Not to hijack this thread or anything, but I'm curious --- is the V12 the reed that O. Lee Gibson brags about 'designing' for Vandoren in his "Clarinet Acoustics' pamphlet?

Long time since I've played the Blue box reeds but for me a Vandoren V-12 #3.5 is almost equal to Rue Lepic #3.5+ and I don't find much differences with both reeds if I'm using long,medium or short lay mouthpiece.

I believe the Lee Gibson made the initial suggestion to Vandoren, when visiting the factory, that they make a reed modelled on the Moree design- and this resulted in the V12 model.
At a later date he was consulted on the Vandoren prototypes, but I don't believe he actually designed the reed. I do recall him commenting, in his column in The Clarinet, that he had received no payment for his services, and I was told by a friend who knew him that he was frustrated that some of his suggestions had not been adopted by Vandoren. I could, of course, be wrong.

FWIW, I have over the past few years wandered among Traditional #5, V12 #4 and #4-1/2 and Rue Lepic #4. At various times I have found each useful. However, in general I have found V12 #4-1/2 harder blowing - stuffier - out of the box than either of the #4 models or the "Blue Box" #5s. I also find the #4s (both models) sometimes stuffier out of the box than many #5 Traditionals. (Also FWIW, I find V-12 #5s useless on the mouthpieces I use). It seems like an obvious guess that this is because the V-12 and Rue tips are thicker than the Traditionals, regardless of how stiff or flexible the cane itself is (which is supposedly how VD rates its reed strengths). Of course, to an extent all of this can be adjusted (with whatever tool you're most comfortable with).
