 Benny Goodman could sing.........

As well as a clarinet, I reckon he carried a bit of the smooth crooner in his backpack - something like Tony Bennett perhaps.

Watch the video to the end too, as Red Norvo does an unforgettable solo on the vibes.

Great playing by the band, and Norvo is amazing. It's like the Laurel and Hardy short, where Stan and another driver tear each others' cars apart.

As a singer, BG was -- well, a pretty good clarinetist. The band sings even worse, probably intentionally.

Goodman is the only person smiling, and seems to be enjoying himself, but this is not so with the other soloists.

Watching this progress, I wondered about Red Norvo hitting his keys so hard. He was swinging in an entirely different fashion.

What was the issue between Norvo & Goodman?

Recall Zoot Sims' remark after the Soviet Union tour: "Everyday with Goodman is like playing in the Soviet Union."

I discovered the clip via the ''Steel Guitar Forum'' - it's another interest that I have.

Here's some discussion about the video - there's quite some interesting reading. I'm still in two minds as to whether it was a set-up or a genuine case of Norvo having a temporary mental wipeout.

I laughed so hard.......THANKS NED!

Arguably the greatest vibes solo ever. Starts off like an ad for the 'clapper'...ends up like Hendrix...What more could you ask for?

I think the end of the Norvo solo is clearly a setup. A side panel of the vibes falls off, and for that to happen screws would have to be loosened. Also, the leather laces supporting bars are woven through hooks. You can't just lift the bars off unless you loosen them in advance. That's why there's no resonance to Norvo's notes. The bars are resting on metal and can't vibrate.
