I just heard Paquito perform with his quintet in Peekskill, NY. He was wonderfully amazing. Energy, creativity, chops, tone quality, humor. ...it goes on and on. He was remarkable. To hear him in person is a real treat - and a privilege. Whenever we get the opportunity to hear someone great, what a fantastic thing. By the way, his drummer, Mark Walker, is truly something else.
Another thing very nice about Mr. D'rivera is that he really connected with this small town crowd. The evening was electric. His latest cd, Funk Tango, is a treat.

Not only is Paquito all of the great things haberc attributes to him, he is also a generous and collegial human being. When he performed a concerto with the National Symphony some years ago I asked him if it the music was available from a publisher. His response -- unsolicited -- was to go the the business center of his (Watergate) hotel and Xerox copies of the piece for all of the members of our clarinet section! Nice that someone has all that talent PLUS is also a wonderful person -- in my vernacular a Mensch.

Paquito played with us at the NY Pops a few seasons ago...what a treat!
When we did Bolero, I asked him if he would like to sit in on First Clarinet and play the opening Clarinet solo, then I'd do the solo on Eb Clarinet. He jumped at the chance to play First Clarinet in an Orchestra (he's always the soloist up front!)
He sounded great at the rehearsal and Skitch Henderson, our former conductor, loved the way Paquito played with his own special style. At the concert, Paquito really sang out and got everyone's head to turn.
Paquito is one of my favorite Jazz players, and he's a very good "legit" First Clarinetist!
Here is Paquito and me at the Bryant Park concert in NYC with The Pops:

I had the marvelous opportunity to see him perform at Bethel Woods, in Bethel NY. Yes, the Woodstock event site. What a fantastic show it was, Jazz Fest 2008.
Study, Practice, Play and Enjoy.
