Hi !
I just got my new clarinet today - Buffet R13 w/ Sliver keys. I love it !! :) - Questions tho -

How long can I play a day ? I know that you should only play a certain amount in the first few weeks etc.. just to break it in.

Any other hints etc ?

Thanks !!

Hi Laur!
Did you get the instruction & care sheet with your clarinet? You should have. If you didn't, you can find a copy at http://www.boosey.com/Instruments/Service/FrameTipsMoreChoice.htm under the "Care and Maintenance Leaflets" on the right hand side. The relevant section says:

<b>To prevent cracking</b>
a. Do not play a new instrument longer than 30 minutes daily during the first month.
b. Avoid any rapid changes of temperature and humidity. For instance, do not leave the instrument in the blazing sun, out-door in winter, or near an air-conditioner or heater.
c. Apply cork grease to the joint corks.
d. Before putting the instrument back in the case, dry the bore completely with your pull-through (swab).
e. When these precautions are observed, no bore oil, etc. needs to be used to prevent cracks on a new instrument.

Sweetie...LOLOLOLOL, forget that garbage, no offense intended to our learned collegues. Your new horn was built to play, play and play for a lifetime....enjoy her!!! Don't be afraid, play your new baby everyday as long as you wish to your hearts' desire. After each practice/gig session be sure to swab her out thoroughly top to bottom at least twice. Also, swab each tenon joint with your index finger to expel the spit trapped in the joints. Case it everyday, these are all GOOD habits that will extend the life of any clarinet. The break in is only six months, get a separate swab and a tube of bore oil. Liberally sprinkle bore oil drops on the swab and "run the horn through" once a month for six months. Store the oiled swab in any sealable sandwich bag. Be careful not to play too much that your lip bleeds and you hurt yourself...LOLOL. Cheers.

Ken are you sufficiently familiar with the timber treatment give to a Buffet by the manufacturer, and are you familiar enough with the chemistry and fiber 'dynamics' of the timber to overide the advice given by this manufacturer who may have put a great deal of scientific research into the subject that would be way outside the scope of almost every player?
Just curious.

Laur,

Ignore the manufacturer's advice at your great peril. Unless you have a warranty that covers cracks, overheating the works could be a disaster.

Is there a recommendation from your vendor as to a first service period? Likely enough that a pad or two may need a little adjustment in a few weeks.

You've undoubtedly racked up some experience on your first horn, good habits that will carry onto this one.

I would let the horn sit in the open case for 30 minutes in your practice room if you've been outside.

Lastly, don't put it in the car next to the heating vents...some of these blow hot enough to loosen pad cement.

Congratulations!

If I were you, I would go with the manufacturer's advice. Too big of a risk.

I stand by what I said, regardless of the mindless chatter. I'd bet a years salary that NO ONE in their post/thread has had any problems with their new horn within the manufacturers unlimited warranty period.

There is nothing mindless about what I wrote.
There is a saying: ......He who knows not, and knows not that he knows not, is a fool - avoid him.

I make reference to the recomendations of Buffet, who must know SOMETHING!

http://www.boosey.com/Instruments/Service/FrameTipsMoreChoice.htm

There is a saying........ He who knows, and knows that he knows, is a leader - follow him.
(Also: He who knows not, and knows that he knows not, is a student - teach him.)

Splitting of new instruments is a serious problem occurring with increasing frequency, possibly because of pressure on timber processing speed and indeed on availability of quality timber.

Of 7 new Marigaux oboes (top quality) recently inported to New Zealand 5 are reputed to have split!

It's not really a LOL matter, and certainly not worth risking nulling and voiding a guarantee by inappropriate action.

Well, Mr. Ken, I've got a mind, I do not chatter, and please send me your years' salary. With it I will buy as many R13s as I can, and will split the number into 2 groups: one group I will treat as Buffet says, one I will treat as you say. Diarys will be kept (I will have to employ helpers for this stage).

At the end of a one year period we will examine the results. All surviving or repairable clarinets will be donated to needy schools.

Thank you for your kind offer to help our understanding of clarinet break-in periods and in offering to help needy children. You may send your one-years salary payment to:
