Our daughter has been playing in school band for about 4 years, and our son about 2 years. They are pleased with their instruments, one is a stock Artley, and one is a stock Buffet B12 with stock mouthpieces.
My daughter has tried the Yamaha 4C and found no difference, so is using the stock Artley mouthpiece. They use 2 1/2 to 3 reeds.
I am thinking of getting a Hite Premiere mouthpiece, and either a Rovner Bb light, or Bb dark ligature for them to try, any ideas on the light or dark for regular middle school/hs band use?

You likely won't notice much of a difference between the light and dark Rovner ligatures. Either would be fine for your children to play on.
As far as mouthpieces, any of the mass produced models is going to involve a bit of a roll of the dice as to whether you get a good one or not. There tends to be a lot of variability in them and I would recommend that you try a few of them before buying one if at all possible. In addition to the Hite Premier I would also recommend looking at the Fobes Debut and the Gennusa Excellente Mezo. All of those are good student mouthpieces at around the same price.

I agree that a student of that age might not notice much difference between a light and dark ligature, their both good. Once they get a comfortable mouthpiece they may notice that the light will probably be a little freer blowing but not as warm a sound but that will vary from one student to another as well. By the way, all though the mouthpiece mentioned are all fine mouthpiece Vandoren makes many models that professionals and students use as well and they too are reasonably priced. A good mouthpiece is the most important item for a young student to have, even more important then the quality of the instrument as long as the instrument is in good playing condition of course. As they become more advanced the quality of the instrument becomes more and more important but the MP is always of prime importance for comfort and tone quality. ESP

All things being equal, I would prefer the Rovner Light (as long as you have the choice). You have all the indistructable characteristics of the Dark but it sounds more like a regular metal ligature.
It really is the ONLY ligature any one of us would ever need.
Not like any of us have only one ligature.

I second the vote for a Fobes mouthpiece -very competitive price on student models. Highly recommended!
I also agree that either of the Rovner lig's would be fine, but probably the Light version may be the way to start.

FWIW I have Rovner's new Star Series.
Time will tell if its as rugged as the traditionally slung models (Dark/Light etc)
