 Clarinet Concerto Performances

I recently (last fall) did a compilation of 443 orchestras, at least 1 from each state AND territory of the US (California has so many orchestras it's ridiculous) and their programs for the 2009-2010 season (over 8400 pieces of music). I wanted to see the frequency of pieces that were played, what was played the most, new commissions, etc. I tried to get every professional/paid orchestra and also included many, many community and semi-professional groups.

Here are the results:

Top 10 played pieces in the US in 2009-2010:

10. A. Dvorak: Symphony No. 8 (played by 42 orchestras)
9. W. A. Mozart: Symphony No. 41 "Jupiter" (42 times)
8. L.v. Beethoven: Symphony No. 9 "Choral" (44 times)
7. J. Brahms: Symphony No. 2 (44 times)
6. S. Barber: Adagio for Strings (44 times)
5. P. Tchaikovsky: Symphony No. 5 (49 times)
4. L.v. Beethoven: Symphony No. 7 (56 times)
3. L.v. Beethoven: Symphony No. 5 (56 times)
2. A. Dvorak: Symphony No. 9 "From the New World" (64 times)
1. L.v. Beethoven: Symphony No. 3 "Eroica" (66 times)

Clarinet Pieces Performed:

W. A. Mozart: Concerto (22 times)
A. Copland: Concerto (6 times)
L. Liebermann: Concerto (6 times)
C.M.v. Weber: Concerto #1 (4 times)
C.M.v. Weber: Concertino (3 times)
C. Debussy: Premiere Rhapsodie (2 times)
A. Shaw: Concerto (2 times)
C. Nielsen: Concerto (2 times)
G. Finzi: Concerto (2 times)
F. Mendelssohn: Concertpiece (2 times)
R. Strauss: Duo Concertino (2 times)
G. Finzi: 5 Bagatelles (1 time - with strings)
M. Gandolfi: Concerto (1 time)
M. Lindberg: Concerto (1 time)
B. Crussell: Concerto #2 (1 time)
C.M.v. Weber: Concerto #2 (1 time)
F. Busoni: Concertino (1 time)
W. Marhulets: Klezmer Concerto (1 time)
M. Neikrug (new concerto commission)
L. Osmon (new concerto commission)

I thought about posting this when the topic about what that fellow should learn this summer was responded to by Mozart and Copland in that order. What a surprise that this lines up exactly with actual data. How splendid!

I lost motivation after completing the US. I was also curious about the different programs in Europe vs. America but didn't have the gumption to go that far with this. If anyone wants a copy of the file I'd be happy to send it via e-mail.

I'm surprised more orchestras haven't programmed Viktor's Tale! :)

And showing the depth of my ignorance, I'm completely unfamiliar with the Liebermann... :)

Thanks for the posting. Nice to see the A. Shaw "Concerto for Clarinet" right "up there" with the Weber's. I've played that work 6 times, locally, with concert bands and it is always a show stopper. With the scope of your survey, I'm am surprised that the Bozza "Concerto" was not performed--also, one of my favs. And, LOL, no wonder that some consider the Mozart to be the *only* clarinet concerto. Very interesting compilation--now get to work on the Europeans.........

This is really interesting, and valuable work. We always talk about the "Orchestral Top 40" but no one ever does the research.

Bravo.

Any other results you come up with will be of great interest.

Eric

Puts' concerto premiered in April 2009, before the scope of this list. I only focused on August 2009-June 2010. Here's the next 40:

13. Symphonie Fantastique - Berlioz (40x)
14. Symphony No. 1 - Brahms (40x)
15. Symphony No. 2 - Sibelius (40x)
16. Symphony No. 4 - Tchaikovsky (40x)
17. Piano Concerto No. 3 - Rachmaninoff (36x - this really surprised me)
18. Symphony No. 6 "Pathetique" - Tchaikovsky (36x)
19. The Four Seasons - Vivaldi (36x)
20. Violin Concerto - Tchaikovsky (36x)
21. Cello Concerto - Dvorak (35x)
22. Violin Concerto - Brahms (35x)
23. Piano Concerto No. 5 "Emperor" - Beethoven (35x)
24. Violin Concerto - Beethoven (34x)
25. Rhapsody in Blue - Gershwin (33x)
26. Symphony No. 3 "Scottish" - Mendelssohn (33x)
27. Violin Concerto - Barber (33x)
28. Pictures at an Exhibition - Mussorgsky (32x)
29. An American in Paris - Gershwin (31x)
30. Piano Concerto - Grieg (31x)
31. Symphony No. 4 - Brahms (31x)
32. Symphony No. 6 "Pastoral" - Beethoven (31x)
33. Violin Concerto - Sibelius (31x)
34. Piano Concerto No. 2 - Chopin (30x)
35. Symphony No. 1 - Beethoven (30x)
36. The Planets - Holst (30x)
37. Enigma Variations - Elgar (29x)
38. Ma Mere l'Oye - Ravel (29x)
39. Romeo and Juliet Overture-Fantasy - Tchaikovsky (29x)
40. Symphony No. 4 "Italian" - Mendelssohn (29x)
41. Violin Concerto - Mendelssohn (29x)
42. Carmina Burana - Orff (28x)
43. Egmont Overture - Beethoven (28x)
44. Piano Concerto No. 2 - Rachmaninoff (28x)
45. Piano Concerto No. 3 - Beethoven (28x)
46. Rhapsody on a Theme of Paganini - Rachmaninoff (28x)
47. Symphony No. 5 - Shostakovich (28x)
48. Symphony No. 8 "Unfinished" - Schubert (28x)
49. Double Concerto for Violin and Cello - Brahms (26x)
50. Symphony No. 2 - Rachmaninoff (26x)

(and tied with 26x for 50th place is Saint-Saens' Organ Symphony (#3), Beethoven's Symphony No. 4, and Mozart's Symphony No. 40)

Will probably add the orchestras I missed before (didn't have the schedule posted yet) in the near future.

This sort of surprises me that a few of the 4th of July, Labor Day, type of peices weren't performed.
