In the long run I'm probably going to want both the Eb and A sizes, I've decided. The C clarinet sounds like a wonderful idea if you're reading concert-pitch parts, but that's about the only major reason you'd want a C. So unless I find a dirt cheap one I think I'll pass.
Also the bass clarinet. Could be a nice thing to get but again, not worth spending a ton of cash in order to get fancy.
So how much should I expect to pay for a new Eb and new A if they aren't professional-grade instruments? What about for a good used one? I've heard about plastic eefers but do they exist for the A size?

For the A clarinet, you can get a rather nice hard rubber one, brand new, from Tom Ridenour. He makes a Lyrique in A for just a little over $1000.

You cna find used plastic eefers online on that not-to-be-named auctin site, or you can frequently accquire one, fully restored and with a warranty, from a sponsor of the BBoard: Clarinuts. Expect to pay at least $300-400 or more for plastic, up to $900 for a woodie from them.
