Dear All

I am thinking of buying my daughter a Hanson Clarinet. I would appreciate your comments on this my budget is around £500.00 the one she is interested in is a SE5-E any other suggestions on clarinet models in my budget. My daughter has been playing the clarinet for 2 years and is a grade 2 she is in the school orchestra and uses it two or three times a week.
Thank you for any advice you can offer me.

Stephen

I think you are paying too much! I have the Hanson student model (cost about £300, perhaps a little less) and I really like it. My (new) teacher has told me that it has a good tone. It is very tough so if your daughter drops it or it falls, it is less likely to need repairing. I am about Grade 4/5. You can always upgrade the mouthpiece later.

At grade 2 and assuming your daughter is quite young then it would be better to stick with a good quality student clarinet until grade 4/5.
The plastic instruments are lighter to hold and not prone to cracking so really a better choice at this stage.
Buffet B12, Yamaha, Jupiter are all sound instruments. I don't have experience of the Hansons myself to give an opinion.
A good quality mouthpiece is important. The Yamaha student level mouthpieces e.g 4C 6C etc are god quality and value and readily available.

Avoid the cheap imports widely advertised like the plague..

A nice thing about Hanson models is that they offer you an upgrade to a higher level Hanson clarinet later on, and you get 100% of what you paid for the beginner instrument toward the upgrade. That's a good deal. The HE-5V outfit is £275, if I am not mistaken.

If she has a good instructor, you might wish to discuss model choices with the instructor.

I have just recently acquired a second hand Hanson T5 and am realy impressed with it. More important though, I have found Alastair Hanson very approachable and more than happy to give advice which I am sure he would do for you if you email or phone him.
From all reports, Hansons 'after sales' care is second to none with repairs and servicing covered for 5 years and as has been pointed out your daughter can always trade up at a later date.
It's also worth asking what they have in the way of used instruments which would be even better value.

The Hanson student clarinet is excellent value and there's a choice of mouthpieces -5RV or B45. I still use mine for playing outside and have never had any problems with it.

The intermediate model would take you up to 500 pounds. I'm not sure what the difference is between the student and intermediate models, but their website has been improved so you should find this info somewhere.

The Yamaha clarinets are also excellent, though they are lighter and made of plastic. The Hanson are hard rubber (ebonite) and have a more solid feel to them.

You can also get a lot of advice from the ABRSM forum:
