Laur -

Look out into the audience and imagine every one of them sitting on the toilet.

Seriously. That way, they're more ridiculous than you.

If that's too gross, imagine them standing on their heads. That requires all their attention, and they won't hear anything you mess up on.

Have fun. Nobody will remember the mistakes -- just the stuff you do well.

I don't know if this post is too late to help, but I'll give it a try anyway. I always play better when I play for myself. If I have a solo, I play for my own ears; I listen and love the sounds I make with or without the ensemble. I don't even think about the audience. Sure they're there, but I think to myself that they only happen to be in that place at that time and can listen to the music I'm making for myself.

Of course that is ideal, and nerves always get to you! :) I also try to live in the moment of my music. If I screw up a passage and think about it, I will be too occupied to concentrate on the music at hand. The same goes for when I think about an upcoming difficult passage. Also, if I'm doing better than I had ever played a piece before, I try not to think about that until I'm done. I have a tendency to psych myself out, get excited and then flub!

Good luck!

Steve

Well this is too late, but here is my advice anyway. After being coerced into a guitar concert(for a huge walkathon at Deer Creek music center). Just play. If you screw it up, what does it really matter. No one will die, nothing bad will really happen. Enjoy yourself and the piece. Here is my whole philosophy to life "If you're not having fun you are not doing it right!"

I had a great time at my concert, I hope you do tonight.

This is way too late. Unlike orchestral or band solos, when playing jazz solos it doesn't matter if you mess up(It does, but). I've heard jazz soloists screw up in the jazz ensembles I've heard but later they can say, "I meant to do that ," because it is improvisation. In improvisation, you make it up as you go along. :)

Is this Anitra's Dance the straight version or a jazz arrangement? If its the later, who is the arranger and publisher?

Focus on the music and block the audience out of your mind. Sit/stand up tall like you're the greatest thing since Benny Goodman. Besides, they know less about the music than you do and are NOT listening for your mistakes. And if you do make any, they will probably think that you are playing what was written, so don't show it on your face if you do make a mistake.

And focus, focus, focus.
