Aluminum has a large coefficient of thermal expansion -- in other words, it changes dimension a lot with temperature changes. This would be problematic if an entire clarinet were made of the material. I've seen some all-aluminum flutes on the used market, but have never heard anyone discuss how well they play.

G.R. Uebel 'New Metal' aluminium flutes (and piccolos) weren't the best things on the market - they did all aluminium bass clarinets as well. Surprised an all aluminium bassoon or contra was never made (unless I'm mistaken).

Interesting comment about the thermal expansion ratio. This may explain why the DEG Accubore barrel that I used years ago fit great some days and other days just plopped down on the upper tenon.
The sound thing IS a consideration. Not long ago I developed a hairline crack in my CSG bell. If you tap on a perfectly good bell, the sound you get is akin to a clave or a marimba bar. The bell with the crack sounded like one tapping on an empty wooden box and the sound from the clarinet was CONSIDERABLY weakened and thin.
I still wonder what these sound like.
I want the purple one.

I have an aluminum barrel that I bought on a whim. Condensation problems in spades......and pitting in the bore.....so it sits in the drawer along with some of my other great whims.
