 Anyone use Ridenour Ivorlone Barrel?

I am looking for a new barrel for my r13 greenline. I have just tried the Scott barrels in different lengths and for various reasons I am not in love with them. I have seen a couple of great reviews on WWBW regarding the Ridenour barrels and would like to give them a try. Does any one here use one or has anyone tried them? What are your thoughts? Thanks.

Work great for me - I'd contact Tom because there are several configurations and you want to be sure to get the correct one for your horn.

I have an Ivorolon model R barrel and have some mixed feelings about it:

1. The barrel does add a generous measure of warmth, sweetness, and overall refinement to the tone.
2. The projection of my clarinets becomes more diffuse/less focused. The sound just kind of floats around the room like a plume of cigarette smoke, rather than smartly getting out to the back of the hall. This is nice for intimate settings; not so much when you've got to cut through a large ensemble.
3. Perceived volume level coming out of the horn drops off slightly.
4. Pianissimo playing becomes quite a bit easier; there is more accuracy and control with pitch and articulation.
5. The twelfths become wider if one uses too high-pitched a mouthpiece. My favorite Selmer HS* mouthpiece doesn't tune well with an R barrel.

I bought the Ivorolon barrel to warm up the tone on a Vito 7214 clarinet, and for that application the Ivorolon barrel works brilliantly. When the stock barrel on my vintage Normandy died, I ended up going to a Backun MoBa grenadilla barrel as I just couldn't get the sound out there with the Ivorolon.

Hope this helps...Cheers, Ursa

I tried an Ivorolon on my 1968 Buffet R-13 back in Dec during a visit to Weiner Music.

Not a good match for my MPC (Gennusa) and horn. I found the sound shallow and shrill. There was also a weird uneven resistance - I couldn't get enough volume in certain registers and other registers were uncontrollable.

You have to test it out on your own MPC and horn though.

I LOVE this barrel, almost 3 months after I got it, though I mainly got a new barrel because the one for my A was loose with the mouthpiece, and my Bb barrel had cracked twice anyway. My A was instantly much better than before, it wasn't squeaking like it was before I replaced the barrel, which for a long time I thought was key and pad adjustments. I found that I too could get really soft pianississimos while still being heard; even my husband noticed a significant difference. (he's a pianist, organist, and trombonist)

Thanks for your input everyone. It sounds like it might be worth a shot if I can get my hands on one.
