Removing smell from old horn, I did it !!

I have acquired old wooden Bundy clarinet and it plays pretty good but is SMELLY.

Followings are how I removed that thing.

I have a SharperImage Air Purifier with attached box which generates Ozone.
I usually don't use ozone box because it generates too much ozone but, this time it worked for me.

I put this equipment in a small room(better than open space) with my smelly old clarinet together(as close as possible) and left them for 3 days.

I would say about 95% of smell is gone.

I couldn't leave this smelly horn on the stand in my living room but it's ok now.

But you should clean the clarinet mechanical too! Some smell comes from rotten organic coating inside the bore and the tone holes. This coating will be inactivated by ozone in the upper skin but not in the deep. The smell comes back in short time ;-/
But on the other hand, ozone is the best way to "desmell" a clarinet. I recommend it all the way. You could put the clarinet and the box into a cardboard box and seal this with self adhesive tape.

But please don't store the ozone filled box inside your living rooms. Ozone is harmful for the eyes and lungs...

kindly
Roman

What works for me to get rid of the smell of an old clarinet is to put it in the trash outside. After a few days - it's gone!!! ;)

When all else fails, an acetylene torch can work wonders! [hot]
