 Site goofiness ...
Author: Mark Charette

The site & databases will be moving to new locations shortly, which always involves some "goofiness" when you're accessing it - both the current and the new copy will be active simultaneously, and sometimes your computer forgets which is which and you might get a "can't find site" message.

It's to be expected. The databases will shift tonight (the site might be a little slower) and then the site should start moving tomorrow (and the site should get significantly faster).

Bear with me; it should all be working "normally" in a few days - if the site can be called "normal" at all! [grin]

And you decided to do this on April Fools' Day.

(sustained applause)
that's the sound of one nerd clapping, in appreciation of how well you maintain the site, Mark, and the hidden perils you have to deal with out there in Code-Land. I will certainly be wishing you well with the transition. Thanks for your work!!

I'll echo Doug's post, we will be patient re: "growing pains" for the best site I know of. Don

Thanx, Mark, Don

"Normal" is way overrated anyhow. (Can anybody here agree on how to define a normal reed? A normal mouthpiece? Didn't think so....) Thanks for taking so much trouble with this site.

And the games begin ... the IP has been switched over. Had to build a couple of new services since I don't control the server this will be running on.

Cross your fingers. I don't know exactly if the system will allow your "cookie" (your login & the 'new' icon settings ) to carry forward. Theoretically it should, but ...

It seems to be working, including the cookie, Mark.

We won't truly know for 24 hours or so, the time it takes for the old IP number to be refreshed.

Things seem to be moving nicely (I made a change to the new site so I could see which site was used just by looking at the posting - the change is there if you look closely).

For thirteen and a half years I have had at least one and as many as six computers running in my house servicing the website and the mailing lists, 24x7, come rain or come shine.

The basement just went dark. The faint hum that has permeated the Charette household all these years is gone.

But nothing has really changed. I never dreamed when I was young that there would be a time when there was no "place", that we all could just "be".

And this evening proved it. A bit scary for me, but nary a change for you.

And that is good.

Congratulations on well-earned peace & quietude and I hope you gave the elderly workhorses a decent sendoff. (I still have my Royal Office Manual typewriter ... needs a good cleaning, but otherwise it's ready whenever I am. No sendoff for THAT baby just yet.)

If this here technology stuff keeps improving, you'll soon be able to run the darn sites from your iPhone! (er..maybe you can already; I wouldn't know.)

Congratulations on the sucessful transition. I wish you managed a bunch of the other websites I use! Btw, DougR, I'm keeping my manual typewriter, too, along with what's left (about fifty sheets) of my last box of carbon paper.

The National Weather Services composite weather & predictions website has been up and down all night, right through the first severe thunderstorm warnings of the season.

I wish their site was as "goofy" as yours...
