Here in Australia there is a student brand of Clarinet called a Steinhoff. It sells for about $Aus 400 ($US367). One of my students recently purchased it new from the Music Academy where I teach. It looks remarkably like the Lyrique instrument of Tom Ridenour, in fact the key work is identical except for the fishtail speaker key. The only real visual difference is that it doesn't have the fat tuning barrel and the tenon rings are more decorative whereas the Lyrique has a plain design. As for the sound , the Steinhoff has a slightly different sound to the Lyrique, it's good but not quite as full bodied as the Lyrique. But the Steinhoff does play well in tune for such a cheap student Clarinet. Like Tom's instrument it is made of hard rubber and has nickle plated keywork. I make the assumption that both Clarinets are made in the same factory in China. Does anyone have any input concerning this ?

They might be made in the same factory and they might not. You can find clarinets from different factories in China that look almost exactly the same. You can also find different looking instruments from the same factory. Some of these cheap clarinets (fka CSOs) are really not so bad and play in tune with a decent tone. Build quality improved a lot also.
A lot of the companies in China (whether it's a factory or a trading company, which sometimes you can't know unless you know...) offer OEM i.e. write whatever name the importer asks. The Steinhoff is probably a name made up by the Australian importer. To know what it is identical to you'd have ti know the factory/company behind it and same for any "names" you want to know are identical.

Do you assume, that Tom's horns are made in China? Do I understand you correctly?

RoBass ,yes I do believe that Tom's Clarinets are made in China to his specifications and then they are sent over to the USA where he fine tunes them and brings them up to a higher standard. Well that is the information that I have seen in his litrature but I'll check up on this.

OK, why not.? If the rubber and bores are made by his advice and quality guidelines, this becomes not a problem. Many brand manufacturers do so their's raw materials or blanks, but I didn't know about his series before.
Thanks for this information!
