 New England

Hi Everyone,

I'm going to be in New Hampshire giving a few masterclasses and working with a few wind ensembles and wanted to know what there is to do there.

I'll be flying into Boston on the 5th of April and leaving on the 15th. If any posters are local and would like to share some local knowledge on where the best places to eat and drink etc that would be great.

Thanks in advance.

Peter....Where in New Hampshire? It's a small state, but where you are will make a big difference. If you're in or near Hanover, you'll be near Dartmouth College. A good spot to be. If you're south, near Portsmouth, you'll be closer to the Boston area.

Weberfan,

I'll be giving a class at the University of New Hampshire which is Portsmouth I think (not the Portsmouth I know though ;-)

Ah, UNH - my alma mater. The college is located in Durham, roughly 7-8 miles inland from Portsmouth. The music program is quite good.

Portsmouth has some fabulous (and many pricey) eateries. I particularly recommend the Press Room on Daniel Street, where they often have live music in addition to excellent, inexpensive pizza and beers.

Portsmouth has a lively and relatively sophisticated nightlife; Durham's is mainly geared toward the college crowd, but The New England Center in Durham sometimes has some nice live music, as does the university itself.

No doubt you'll have a good time at UNH. I'd certainly be interested in hearing more about your visit either here in the forum, or via email. Enjoy!

Portsmouth is a nice little town. I was up there a couple of times a number of years back and really enjoyed it.

Check out this list for reference

Peter,

True. Not YOUR Portsmouth, and much farther from the Isle of Wight.

While Portsmouth has its own considerable charm, Boston is but 50 miles away and worth the trip. My hope is that your hosts will take you, though your campus schedule may be crowded.

In Boston, plenty of good pubs and restaurants, the New England Conservatory of Music and the Boston Symphony, the Isabella Stewart Gardner Museum. And, on the Cambridge side of the Charles River, Harvard Square.

Thanks for the suggestions, please keep them coming.

I will be giving masterclasses at UNH (date and time tbc), two days at St Thomas High School on the Wedneday and Thursday coaching and giving a masterclass. I will also be coaching the Seacoast Wind Ensemble on the 6th April.

If any posters are in the area and would like to come then please do and please make yourselves known to me.

Sylvain I'll email you

Legal Seafood has several locations including one at Logan Airport (Terminal B I believe but am not sure). It is excellent and the prices are quite fair. The Boston Creme Pie is delicious.

Another great place to visit is the Cheer's bar. The bar that inspired the show is a great place. Its homey and the conversation is lively. Its across the Boston Commons from the Four Seasons. A replica of the TV's bar is at Faneuil Hall Marketplace.

The Sam Adam's brewery is there in Boston as well. Most of beer is actually made in Cincinnati but their R&D is there and they give a good tour.

Oh, and be sure to visit the Red Hook Brewery in Newington, between Portsmouth and Durham. The food's okay, but the beer's fine. :-)

If the Border Cafe is still in Cambridge and still is as good as it was the one time I was there (ca. 1993) then you're in for a treat! :)
