Is this the school located in NC? If so, feel free in emailing me or actually calling me since you are so close by.

So sorry for not being clear--I'm new here. I'm trying to find out if anyone has attended the Brevard summer program for high schoolers or the BUTI summer program.
My offspring has been accepted to both (and Interlochen) and she is looking for an ensemble experience but also skill-building. There seems to be a lot of first-hand info on this forum about Interlochen, but not the other two. We are favoring Brevard for a few different reasons.
Appreciate any info, especially more recent feedback as I know a lot of these programs have changed.
Many thanks!

My son spent a summer at BUTI maybe 11 or 12 years ago. It was a very rewarding experience for him. The conductors were all well-regarded symphonic conductors (I remember one was JoAnn Falleta) and they assumed all the players were of high caliber and had high expectations of every player.

As someone who spent a summer at Brevard, albeit many years ago, I have mixed feelings about recommending the festival.

Many years ago, long before I attended, Brevard was considered a first rate summer festival and attracted top teachers and students. By the time I participated in the festival it was definitely living on its reputation.

I don't know what upgrades they may have made to the faculty in the intervening years. I get a brochure and fundraising appeal each year that immediately goes into the recycling.

On the upside, there should be a huge number of performance opportunities for a high school student. If your child hasn't studied with a serious, top level instructor Brevard may be a nice step up and a chance to work with a college level instructor. Again, things may have changed, but when I was there university students usually studied with the "name" instructor at the festival and high school and junior high students worked with faculty who were usually instructors at area colleges (Brevard, Converse, etc.)

My recollection is that ensembles were very uneven. Some good players, lots of not so good players. The festival orchestra (faculty and top students) wasn't too bad, but I would think that unless your child is a top notch string player they aren't going to be playing in the festival orchestra.

Finally, and again it's been years since I attended, the facilities at Brevard were substandard. Hopefully they have been upgraded but when I was there they were jokingly described as "rustic". The cabins should have been condemned, the performance spaces were a joke, practice facilities were non existent, and the food was barely edible. Please understand, I don't think children and college students need to have facilities equal to a resort. Believe me, I'm being kind to them about the facilities.
