Are you referring to a green oxidation in a chrome over brass cap or brown oxiation of a steel cap? Most metal caps I've seen are chrome over brass. Muriatic acid will remove this oxidation without dammaging the good metal, but be carefull not to breath it or splash any on you.

Another suggestion would be to just buy a new mouthpiece cap. they're not all that big of a crunch on the pocket book, and may be cheaper than buying the materials necessary to clean the metal on the thing! It's just a little piece of pressed metal, unless it is a prized possesion, I wouldn't worry about finding methods of cleaning it. Also, if the same rusting might be happening to the new one, you might have a moisture problem in your case. Maybe too much moisture from humidifiersm or you might use those Pad Daver thiings that will hold moisture in the insturment. this could eventually cause corrision on the keywork or in the smaller spaces, like the hinge rods, that could lead to sticking keys, and other problems. So the cap might just be a warning sign of other problems.

This works for me, tb0b -
Use any powdered cleanser. Rub it around inside the cap with your moistened finger or a damp cloth - then, rinse with warm water. Wipe well with a paper towel or cloth. After most of the rust is gone apply vegetable oil *sparingly* to the inside.

Shift your thinking and invest in a good ligtaure. Some models come with their own plastic mouthpiece caps.
