The numbers of each manufacturer only represent nearby the same stepping inside his own series. There's no general stiffness-number-correlation. One example: the Rico Royal series starts with 1,5 and ends with 5. The comparable Vandorens starts the same number, but the stiffness of a 2,5-reed could be compared to a 3-3,5 of Rico Royal. The Vandoren reeed seems to be harder with the same number.
For long facings (this is nearly long) you should choice a weaker reed like 2 or 2,5 if you play otherwise 3-4 on medium or short MPC.

It depends on how much mouthpiece you take into your mouth and how much pressure you apply to the reed. I suggest you try a few numbers in the middle, like a 3 or 3.5 reed and adjust from there. Everyone plays differently so what works for one person may not work the same for you. ESP http://eddiesclarinet.com
