I heard recently that Alan Greenspan is/was an accomplished reed instrument player. Anyone know what he played? What kind of music?

Hi. I mentioned your post to a friend of mine, because it peaked my curiosity.

He said with certainty that Greenspan plays sax, and that he was almost positive it was a tenor. Apparently he heard it on Paul Harvey's The Rest of the Story.

Ok. Sorry to follow up my own response, but I was curious and did some quick 'net research.

Apparently after high school, Greenspan went to Juilliard School and played clarinet and saxophone in a swing band as his first real job.

I'll try not to look deeper into it, but if I "accidentally" come across more info, I guess I'll be compelled to share.

Must have played "Rags to Riches" once too often.

He found profession too demanding and landed an easier job. (Fewer alternate fingerings and less system complexity... M1 & a M2.)

He's also an Ayn Rander, whoever she was.
