 Which Clarinet Should I get?
Author: renjer

Hi I already own a Bb clarinet but I wish to add either of a C or A clarinet to my collection. However I am not too sure which to get.

For me I think C is quite good as I don't have to transpose the music to fit the clarinet. But then, the A clarinet can handle sharp keys much better than my Bb clarinet.

I'm looking at the Berkeley Pro A or C clarinet.

Any ideas?

If in doubt, get both and be covered for all eventualities.

I wish I had a C clarinet in my collection as I could do with it right now - and that's a proper wooden C clarinet (preferrably an old Selmer with all the extra gadgets) and not the Lyons plastic C clarinet in my attic.

A Clarinet - much more standard than the C.

A clarinet for sure! A's are always very useful! Particularly in orchestra, it seem as if half the music I play is in A! And I am using the Mozart and Nielsen concerti for competitions.

Go with a more meaningful reason than what's standard.

What are you going to do with the instrument? What kind of playing do you plan on doing?

If you were focusing on chamber or orchestral music, than an A clarinet would be more useful than a C, I think.

If you are playing a lot of Broadway shows and have trouble playing flute or transposing flute parts on Bb clarinet, then a C clarinet might be useful (as long as they don't mind you playing flute parts on a clarinet).

Just a couple of examples to think about!

If you are thinking that you might play in an orchestra in the near future, the A clarinet will benefit you most. On the other hand, if you are playing with piano, flute or other non-transposing instruments rather than in an orchestral or chamber music group, the C clarinet might work well for you.

I'm borrowing a Leblanc LL C clarinet for the week, so that's me happy!

I'd agree that an "A" would be more practical for Chamber/Orchestra use. If you're playing other instrument parts on clarinet, a C would be useful, and if you're doing work for band, learning Eb Sopranino would be fun (or Bass). I'm not sure about the Berkeley Clarinets though...I haven't seen anything about them on either side of the fence. There is that guy that has been fixing them up on our favorite auction site though...

Is this the Berkeley?:

There is one website that shows their C instrument, but they don't:

If you want to play classical chamber and symphony music, there's a great deal of that music in A clarinet. If you want to play off of piano sheet music then I guess a C clarinet makes more sense. The vast majority of classical musicians do not own a C clarinet, but they all own an A clarinet. ESP http://eddiesclarinet.com

Thanks for all your replies. I think I will be getting the A clarinet.

By the way I saw the Berkeley clarinets on ebay.
