 Barrel larger bore?
Author: jacoblikesmusic

What is a larger barrel bore generally like such as resistance and how loud one can play.

I'm testing 11 moba barrels and have half of them as the larger bore so I was just wondering what the general differences are.

What kind of horn are you using?

The larger bores can lower the pitch, such as tuning to 440 may drop to 438. To counter this you can use a shorter barrel such as 64mm's.

Buffet R13 barrels are tapered, the part of the barrel connecting to the mouthpiece is the larger, then tapers to a smaller size, connecting to the upper joint of the clarinet.

If you aren't using an electonic tuner when testing these barrels you may wish to consider using one. The reason is the lower joint may play sharp and the upper register could go flat. It's really a science, because mouthpieces take a major part in tuning.

Needless to say the sound quality is perhaps your first critical test.

I don't mean to be rude Jacob, but since you are the one trying them out why don't you tell US what you think the differences are?

What are you playing on now?
Do you play on an old Conn or older Selmer?

Did you specifically order wide bore barrels?

Or...do you mean that some of the barrels have a taper bore? That is a different matter.

I ordered half as a +bore just to see if they made any differences in playing but I havn't really noticed much.

I'm testing them on both my R13 and my Yamaha CS.

Since I've noticed next to nothing that really stands out with the larger bore size I was wondering if there would be something I should be looking for.

As for why I'm testing out a bunch of barrels is because one of my clarinet buddies in a local band said it made his instrument better in tune and added a little something to the tone.

The differences he mentioned aren't as great as I thought they were so is the + bore designed specifically for something?

An entirely personal opinion/view. I am a believer in matching bore sizes of mp to top of barrel, bottom of barrel to top of UJ . I f you have a small little finger you can readily detect a slight diff in bores , and I have never heard of any evidence whereby a step in diameters is of benefit. I'll certainely bow to Alseq's and other barrel makers judgement re:close matching, perhaps I just feel more comfortable as regards tonal character and pitch. PM thots, Don

Most of the after market barrels, at least the ones I'm familiar with which of course means not every one of them make them with smaller barrels because they usually tune better. I'm sure there are some exceptions. My experience is that the larger the bore the less focus the tone and the flatter the throat tones. But that's been my experienece. ESP http://eddiesclarinet.com

Jacob, it seems to me that "because someone else was doing it" is not exactly the best reason for you to try the same thing. Unless you have specific issues with your clarinets, issues that might be corrected by suing different barrels, all that you are doing is feeding the GAS monster.

What problems are you having that you feel a new barrel will solve? Not what problem yoour friend was having, but you. Once you can identify any issues,m then you should communicate directly with the makers of the barrels to see if what they make can solve your issues. Otherwise, you are just chasing expensive butterflies.

To the original poster:

Instead of investing in barrels on the advise of you friends in a band, see what a fine teacher can do for your sound and tuning.
Oh snap...just lost another sale due to honesty.

Ahah well that still doesn't help my original question of the characteristics of a larger barrel bore.

With help I have been designing clarinet barrels. The most important aspect is the top opening, bottom opening and taper. Larger bore than stock is very dependent on the taper from top to bottom. Taper being the most important of all. For R-13's of newer vintage - early 1970's + the openings are generally similar for most custom barrels to the stock barrels but taper can make a world of difference. Although we have had "material" posting strings IMO the material makes a difference in sound too. The best advice has already been given - to disregard barrel dimensions and try it out yourself and see if it makes a significant difference for you - alternately, have your teacher try out barrels on your horn and suggest what he/she likes best.

Keepin it simple:
Unless you use proper breath support and embouchure characteristics, and have a good concept of a great sound.... you will not notice a difference.........but....... Wide bore barrels maintain the pitch and sound characteristics on wider bore clarinets. On narrow bore clarinets, wide bore barrels mess up the intonation and the sound.
