Is there a place in the NYC or Long Island area that anyone recommends as a good place to try out mouthpieces? I would like to find a replacement for my Vandoren 5rv Lire, which is not working too well (resistance too high) on my newly acquired vintage Buffet R13 (serial 106xxx). Thanks.

I think I mentioned the same thing in a previous inquiry by the OP.

Frederic Weiner on Long Island has a good selection, however they do charge a restocking fee.

Check Weiner's to see if you can go in to try equipment. Recently a colleague of mine went in to try some new clarinets. He asked if he could also check out some mouthpieces and barrels. They were reluctant and suggested that he mail order to try them.
http://www.wrightmusic.biz/ is also out on Long Island, pretty easy to get to by car or train and has some good equipment worth trying.

If you're in Manhattan, on West 48th Street, the Sam Ash store carries a variety of Vandoren mouthpieces. The tryout rooms aren't much to brag about, but the prices are competitive. Call ahead to see what they have in stock: they've usually got M13's, M15's and various B's..ie, 40 45, etc.

Ok, who can tell us the name of the store were "Crazy Jonathan," formerly of Weiner's is now working? The best of Weiner's went with him and I can't for the life of me remember to write that down.

Jonathan is the owner of Wright music, which I mentioned in the post above. I completely agree- Jonathan is a prince of a guy, who knows what excellent customer service is all about. There is nobody better out there.

Myself and a friend went to Weiner at the end of December. You absolutely have to make an appointment to trial mouthpieces - which we didn't realize. I've always made appointments to test clarinets at shops, but never MPC's.
When we arrived after a long journey, we had to wait about half and hour as they have only one room available to try out equipment. Luckily no one else had made an appointment during that day, and Weiner was able to accomodate us.
The equipment they had was very limited. I wanted a back up Gennusa and they only had 1 in stock. My friend wanted to try a few other mouthpieces, and most were out of stock and then they only had one of each to try. The sales staff seemed a bit confused as to why we would want to try more than one of the same mouthpiece....
Since it was December, it is possible all of their stock was sold out or in the mail order universe. Before you make a trip up there, make sure you have made an appointment and that you request there be several mouthpieces of the type you want to test out. Otherwise they wont have it in stock or just have one.

re: griffinity's post. Based on my experiences, I suspect that Weiner may keep a greater stock of those they sell a great deal of, perhaps Vandoren and some others. I have had the same experience that I asked for a number of things that they either did not have or only had single items. They likely order additional ones as they receive orders.
It is expensive to stock every item and I imagine other mail order stores may do this as well.

Thanks for responses. I have tried to contact David Gould with no luck. I would prefer something on LI, so I will try to contact Weiner. I am going to see Chad Ghoudash in a couple of weeks so he can check his overhaul and see how it works for me.
