 Backun Barrel questions
Author: csinc
Date:   2010-03-13 18:51

I tried a Backun Cocoboro 66mm ringless barrel from a Leblanc Smyphony clarinet with my R13 and liked the results, so ordered one for myself. I just it got in the mail, but it does not seem to fit on my R13 (or with my mouthpiece for that matter).

Are there different versions of the barrel and I just got the wrong one? It did not seem like there were differentiations for different makes of clarinet.

Thank you.

-Adam

I think there are at least three different versions available. One for Buffet,Leblanc, Yamaha and Pre-Signature Selmers. One for Yamaha CSG and finally one for Current Selmer models.

Dear Adam,

I suggest that you contact Mr Backun directly. He is utterly professional and highly accommodating. He, as the creator of barrels, bells, and clarinets, is best suited to explain to you which one of his barrels might best suit you. He posts on this board. best wishes

Tenon dimensions can be highly variable, even within the same brand of clarinet. They change over time as well.
Likewise, barrel sockets change just by being exposed to shipping.
That is why custom barrel makers will adjust your product to accomodate the instrument.
Call or write him.

disclaimer....I make custom barrels.

Get a micrometer and measure the top and bottom of your barrel that already fits. Then include those measurements with your order.

I agree with Mr. Segal, that all barrels undergo changes outside of the makers hands.

That being said, Backun barrels seem to be the most variable. I've tried some that I can't get any mouthpiece to fit on, and others where you could almost put a finger in the gap with the mouthpiece in it!

THAT being said. Backun makes many models. Many in stores or sold on auction sites have possibly been adjusted after leaving Backun's shop.

ALL THAT being said, just contact Morrie. Due to all these factors, this is not the first or last time someone will have this issue. Call him, he'll send you something that works.

Mr Segal is correct

I have a theory that the variation may be actually caused by the ringless nature of the barrels, but never confirmed that. But yeah, just contact Morrie and he'll sort it out for ya.

I use his bells and barrels on all my clarinets, Buffets and Selmer, and love them but I experienced the same problem when I choose mine. The difference was that I tried out many before choosing the ones I liked. Every one, no matter who makes it, will play slightly differently so you should always ask for at least four to try when ordering one of any barrel. I would say that only about one of four or five didn't fit properly but they still all play slightly different. ESP http://eddiesclarinet.com

Give Backun a call and they'll hook you up with something that works. I'm auditioning a batch of six Backun MoBa barrels right now and, yes, they are all subtly different.

Luckily for me, I found a absolutely magnificent Grenadilla barrel that's a perfect fit and sonic match for my vintage Normandy. Good luck on your search!

Whenever I have purchased a barrel or a bell directly from Backun, Erika who answers the phones will usually ask what make clarinet and what mouthpiece I use. She then sends several of each, which you can play at home for several weeks before returning. As a result I have always had a good match.

I recently ordered a trial of barrels and bells from Backun back in October and I found many of the same problems with fitting the bells on. Some were way too big and some were perfect. So I kept one of the ones that fit and returned the ones that didn't fit and asked for another trial for comparison. I was extremely happy with their service for letting me keep their barrels and bells for weeks before returning them. I found that I liked the Moba models the best after trying 6 of each type of barrel and bell.

The barrel I picked fits my R13 prestige Bb and R13 A perfectly but the bell is so big for my A. Maybe if I get bigger cork on the bottom it will fit...

If you want to order a trial here is their website and the contact information is on there as well on the bottom of the home page.

If your new barrel or bell is a little too big a temporary, quick fix is to wrap the tenon cork with Teflon tape. This white tape used by plumbers to wrap threads is exactly the width of the cork at the bottom of my Buffet.
