I found a deal on a new Vandorem M14 profile 88 series 13 mouthpiece. I figured what the heck, give it a try. I have been playing on a 5RV Lyre. Wow, what a difference. I am amazed at the difference in sound and playing characteristics you get by changing mouthpieces. As a beginner I didn't think I would find that much change by swapping mouthpieces. I love the dark sound I get from the M14 and the ease of playing dynamics is amazing. Both mouthpieces work for me, but I think the M14 has become the flavor for me.
Out of curiosity, what are everyones favorites?

I have five mp and My Gregory Smith Kasper is by far the best. I can hit the upper register with it where I have to play up to them with the other mp. glad you found one that works for you.
I really don't understand the vast differance between one and another.

I have two pomarico ebony wood mouthpieces, a Pomarico Crystal and a Vandoran B45. The B45 is quite old as it was one of my first mp's, then I liked the crystal so i bought one of those. When I changed teachers a while back, he detested crystal mouthpieces and the sound it was giving me so he told me go shop around for something else. So, I went to lots of stores and tried a range of brands including Fobes, Selmer, Pyne, and then I came across the Pomarico wooden. It was amazing the difference it made to my tone and everything Jeff mentioned. Good Clarinetting

Aussie Nick reminded me of an interesting point. I wonder how many times each of us have been pleased with the sound we were getting, but were convinced, persuaded, or otherwise coerced into an equipment change to satisfy our teacher. I still remember the early Bay mp I had in about 1966-67. My new teacher didn't like it . . . "too bright". So he swapped it out for a Vandoren 2RV. Guess who got the better end of that deal . . .

Yes. Fred ... OUCH! That was tantamount (almost) to Grand Larceny! Honestly, I don't know why a teacher would swap out; never heard of the practice. Procuring & getting reimbursed, YES. oh well ... mw

I dropped my teacher that was selling gear... that's a clear conflict of interest.
As to mpcs, it seems to be hit and miss as to which mpc plays well for any given player. I recently tried one of the fabled Kaspars and couldn't get a better sound than with my M13!
The interface doesn't end at the mpc, it includes everything the doctor looks over when you're asked to open wide and say, "Ahhhh...".
