Hey Everybody,

Are there any orchestral excerpt books for clarinet that are more acurate and complete than the Bonade book?

Thanks,
Sam

You could buy the series of books put out by International Music. They are edited by McGinnis and Drucker. Eight volumes in all, I think.

Also, if you want more intense studies, try Haddcock's "The Working Clarinetist". This
guide contains many important orchestral excerpts used frequently in auditions and
performances as well as some helpful pointers in a few important concertos. Not only
does this book contain exceprts, Haddcock takes you through each one with a step
by step masterclass approach. It is like having a private lesson on paper. Very handy!

I also have the published and unpublished versions of the Hadcock book. (My teacher was proofreading it for him before he died) and his wife left out lots of excerpts that were in the first. Although the published version is much cleaner (both in print and the fact that the unpublished copy i have is coffee-stained and about 2nd or 3rd generation poor-photocopy).

The IMC series has the same typos that the Bonade book has and more (because it has more excerpts). Infact, some of the plates are identical, i believe. Even having some of Bonade's footnote markers but no footnotes. But even so, they are still adequate books for introduction into orchestral excerpts. I usually buy the parts themselves and reference the books to see the most common excerpts but practice the whole thing.

i thought i heard some rumor about bonade's book being revised presently since all those russian pieces were altered slightly to comply with whatever stringent regulations were in effect at the time, and now that i guess those copyrights turned to public domain or russia opened up or what have you, those things were going to be corrected??? did i just dream this up or has anyone else heard anything to that effect?? - thanks
