 Clarinet key set-up
Author: Tony F

Can anybody suggest a sequence of adjustments for setting up a clarinet? After repadding several instruments I've run across a few problems with pad lift height and key interactions causing intonation problems. I've been able to resolve these mostly by trial and error, but I realize there has to be a better method. Can anybody recommend a publication where I could find this info concisely laid out? Thanks in anticipation.

I believe this may be a manufacture specific thing (or even, specific to model of certain era of a a certain manufacturer sort of thing).

All I know is that I ran into a repairman of repute who loves to really open up the pad heights on the bottom to make the horns play louder, but yes, for me it caused heartache over the uneveness of timbre and ..........yes, pitch.

The Complete Woodwind Repair Manual by Reg Thorp, available here: https://web.memberclicks.com/mc/quickForm/viewForm.do?orgId=napbirt&formId=36938 (scroll to the bottom)

Or Guide To Repairing Woodwinds by Ronald Saska http://www.amazon.com/Guide-Repairing-Woodwinds-Ronald-Saska/dp/0939103036/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&s=books&qid=1267417956&sr=8-1 older and missing more modern approaches, not as thorough. But still very decent.

There is also a new book by Steve (Stephen) Howard http://www.bookdepository.co.uk/book/9781844256389/Saxophone-Manual it is only about saxophones, but aimed more for a beginner who might later advance with the Thorp book. It can be a little annoying if you are only interested in clarinets since it is ony about saxophones and refers to the specific keys of sax. But as far as how to do those things yourself etc. it is perfect for a beginner and also explains the principals. Hard to say whether I'd recommend it for clarinets only. It's the nicest looking one with lots of colour photos, etc.
