Greetings,
I am currently renting an instrument for my son in school band (4th grade), and looking to replace it with a permanent instrument. Where is the best place (online or brick and mortar) to purchase a Buffet B12? I am in the Boston area, but I suppose I could order anywhere by telephone. I have seen them list for about $925, but I would hope there are significant reductions.
Thank you in advance for recommendations.
Alex

That is a pretty standard retail price, but at cost they're a good 400 less than that... good luck

Invest in a Ridenour clarinet for him instead. He'll be able to use it for much longer without needing to spend more on upgrading. Look at tthe Lyrique 146. A great buy for the money. For the $1K, you could get him Tom's Pro-line 576 model.

Buffet has an agreement with all of its dealers, there are minimum selling prices for certain clarinets and minimum advertised prices for others. Please take the time to call the dealers in your area to find out what they might be selling the clarinet for; often the advertised price is vastly different from the selling price.
I'm not a fan of the Lyrique in any way so I think the Buffet 12 is probably a fine choice. The keywork is terrific, the intonation is very fine and it plays quite well.
The only negative to the 12 we have found are the springs. They are all blue steel springs and if this clarinet goes outside a great deal in wet weather they will rust. In PA the typical selling price is closer to $550. I'm not a fan of buying out of town much, I like dealing with someone close by to service my purchases and provide me with guidance and accessories.
Good luck.

Sorry, but i havce to disagree. Both the B12 and the E11 are highly overpriced for what you get. I was amazed at the poor construction the first time I picked one up while assisting a beginning clarinet sectional at my daughter's school. In my opinion, you cna do much better for the money.

On eBay: Selmer Signet clarinet (100, special, soloist, etc...) you can get them with a recent overhaul and a trial period for around $200-250.
A wooden clarinet, better than a Buffet B12 and equal to an E11.
The Ridenour is an excellent instrument.
