 Scale studies
Author: neil.clarinet

Over time there have been a number of study book that focus around scales in various keys and in many different guises, eg. in 3rds, 4th etc., down to tonic after each note, full range of the instrument, arpeggios in different shapes. I am looking for some ideas at two levels - one at roughly college/conservatoire level for myself, and more intermediate/late elementary for my pupils. I already use Demnitz for the latter stage but find it quite dry and uninteresting, at least after a while. What about Baermann 3, Klose etc.

At least in the UK the term 'scales' often means memorising masses of scales for ABRSM or Trinity exams, mostly up and down only, and studies depend what crops up in list C at various grades. I am looking for a change.

Baermann 3 is my "clarinet bible." I still use it, and have many of my high school students using it too. I used it all the way through college as a performance major.

The J.B. Albert "24 Varied Scales and Exercises" is nice for the intermediate levels.

The recent version of the Pares scale study book has been in print since 1941 and is one of the standard texts used by many teachers. The print and layout are appealing to the eye. It goes through scales and patterns up to 4 sharps and 4 flats. At the end of the book, the different scale, arpeggio, left hand/right hand studies, etc.. are excellent technique builders.

My students have also had good success usung the Stievenard - Practical Study of the Scales. It goes a bit further - up to 6 sharps and 6 flats. I like the way each rhythmic pattern is in a different time signature.

For the college/conservatoire level, the book I use is (IMHO) pretty hard to beat. It's "Klarinetten-Schule Band 2" (translated "School of Clarinet, vol. 2") by Rudolf Jettel. It's got just about every kind of scale or arpeggio you can think of (including harmonic minors, melodic minors, and whole-tone scales; it's got augmented and half-diminished arpeggios, too)--and over the entire practical range of the instrument. It also has scales in 3rds, 4ths, and 5ths, exercises on 6ths, 7ths, and 9ths, and arpeggio exercises (in various permutations) over ii7-V7-I cadences. You could sort of think of it as a 20th century update to Baermann III.

Jettel also wrote a book together with Hans Bender called "Tonleiter Studien" (or "Scale Studies"). I'm not really familiar with that one, but you might check it out--it's supposed to contain unusual patterns on scales and arpeggios.

Here in the States, Jettel's books are little more difficult to find than they are in Europe. Since you are in the UK, though, they probably aren't as difficult to find. In any case, I bought mine in PDF Download format online directly from the publisher (in Austria). Their website is http://www.music2print.at.

For elementary/intermediate students, the scale patterns in the Klose Method are perfectly adequate. They don't cover the same range over the instrument as Jettel (or Baermann, for that matter), nor is it as complete in terms of the different types of exercises. Nonetheless, it does contain the most essential exercises (major and melodic minor scales, chromatic scale, scales in 3rds, major and minor arpeggios, and diminished 7ths [as well as a few others]), so it's perfectly adequate for building a solid foundation upon which to continue one's studies. For many years, it was the only scale/exercise book I used.

The Pares are great studies, but the newer edition has had much of the studies removed. if you can, get the older edition-I am still able to find them for students.
After Pares, I have my students do the Klose, scales, and scales in 3rds. After that, they move to Baermann3.

I found one of the original 1912 editions at a church thrift shop and bought it for 5 cents !!

Yes - there are additional studies and fingering exercises in the back which the newer editions do not have.

Mine's red instead of GBK green, copyright MCMXII, 1912 and has all the exercises in the back. According to the dates I did one key signature a month. After you got through 4 #s and bs it was time for Baermann. It was purchased new in ~1953 for $0.75.

I'd add that Book III of the Kroepsch 416 Studies would be good for advancing students and college level as well.

For the higher level students, perhaps, I'd recommend the Stark "Arpeggio Studies."

From a fellow brit, my teacher put me through all the scales in Thurston & Frank "The Clarinet" - which come in thirds, interrupted and broken chords in all keys.

Very useful to have under the fingers for orchestra, band etc.

Vanessa.

I know a lot of teachers use Baermann, but personally, I like to get through the Klose scales, and scales in 3rds before I get to Baermann. The Baermann jumps right into the high altissimo stuff. Personally, I think that a student has to have a strong foundation before attempting the extreme stuff. The Klose is a great "preliminary" study to the baermann.
Basically, I find working on Klose for 4-6 months, means that I can have the student "finishing" Baermann in 6 months, where it would take two years without the Klose preliminary (I dont know if the math is exact, but you get the point).

...and I think I have a great thrift store deal that compares with other mentioned. I was in a Thrift store in Mass maybe ten years ago. They had a pile of music, most of it crap, but there was this bound hard cover thing. So I opened it, and inside someone had bound 3 different studies of the Jean Jean.
It had the 18 studies, and two other Jean Jean books (I cant remember which ones). best $5 I ever spent.

Pick a key, set your metronome to 40bpm, then find the appropriate parts of

Kroepsch I - III and Hamelin.

I like to do one key and its relative minor every day for a week, before moving on to another key. Keeps things nice and pretty.

Slow is smooth, smooth is fast...
