 Name the clarinetist?
Author: GBK

A recent posting by John Moses pointed me to the long lost 1955 Leonard Bernstein Omnibus TV program titled "What is Jazz"

Part 4 features a jazz clarinet player:

and the same player performs "Prelude Fugue and Riffs" on Part 5

Anyone recognize him or any of the other musicians?

Hi GBK:

Good challenge! A good guess might be John LaPorta. He taught & played in NYC during the 1950s, and performed with the NY Philharmonic, but he may not be our man? Any other good guesses?

Gotta love Lenny... Educating, philosophising, composing wonderful music and conducting it brilliantly from memory! Very tight ensemble playing too. Thanks for the link GBK!

I second Ken Shaw on Al Gallodoro. After the first clip, I was thinking maybe Toots Mondello or someone of that ilk (lesser known but solid player), but the legit sax ensemble in the second clip took pretty classically oriented chops; plus, Lenny would have known Al, but probably not Toots.

Looks like Al Gallodoro to me:

Here's a photo of John Laporta for comparison:

Hey Guys:

I'm now thinking he looks & sounds like Artie Baker.

John LaPorta is the sax player in the back row furthest away, at the end of the clip.
