This is slightly off-topic, but since I (and Ed P, too) originally recommended Spohr to xpedx, I thought this was as good a place as any to mention this.
Spohr's kind of an interesting guy from a historical point of view. In fact, it's really surprising he's not more well known. Here are some neat little bits of party trivia guaranteed to impress your musical friends (even string players).
1.) Spohr was the first conductor to use a baton.
2.) Spohr invented the violin chinrest.
3.) Spohr invented rehearsal letters. (In other words, when the conductor tells you to go back to "letter D" in rehearsal...the practice putting in a "letter D" in the score and parts was Spohr's idea.)
4.) Spohr was a contemporary and friend of Beethoven, Weber, and Wagner. Weber gave him a recommendation that landed him a job as music director of the court at Kassel, Germany, a position he held for almost 40 years. Spohr was an early champion of Wagner and helped produce two of Wagner's operas.

Also some more unknown trivia for Spohr:
1) Was drafted in the first round by the Dresden Dragons as a striker for the best German soccer team in the 18th century.
2) Knew the clarinet was a best instrument to write concerti for. Hence only clarinet players believe his music to be the equivalent of Bach, Mozart, and Beethoven.
3) Was hired by the Buffet Mafia in 1795 to poison Salieri to get even for Mozart. This clandestine operation was was uncovered by no less than the Archbishop of Salzburg who made Spohr listen to 24 hours of Salieri's music nonstop. This almost killed him.
4) He auditioned for Das Apprentice, an open air reality show held annually in the Frankfurt town square and hosted by Der Donald. Schubert won that year (1799). And that's why Schubert moved to Vienna.
5) Wanted to write music for Stadler but had to settle for Hermstedt because Stadler was too busy learning K622.

It's obvious that Spohr was better than Mozart.
Spohr wrote four clarinet concerti. Mozart only one.
