 Purchasing Orchestral Clarinet Parts
Author: Don Gross
Date:   2010-02-11 15:43

For some reason, I can't seem to remember the source (Luck's, Kalmus?) for purchasing individual orchestral clarinet parts. While I have Drapkin's "Symphonic Rep. for the Bass Clarinet," I really would like to get a copy of the bass clarinet part for the Hindemith "Symphonic Metamorphoses." Thanks!

Eble music will send you kalmus parts. They usually arrive at your door within a day or two of ordering.

I don't know that you can buy an individual part to this piece, because like many 20th century pieces, this one's a rental.

You could buy the study score, though, and make your own part from it to practice from. That's what the music librarian at Boosey & Hawkes once recommended I do when I was looking for a part for a rental piece to practice from.

The study score is available from the publisher (Schott's in Mainz, Germany) or from Luck's Music Library.

Lucks or Kalmus will sell individual parts. But depending on what parts you need, before buying them anywhere check first at the Petrucci Music Project http://imslp.org/wiki/. They have a really vast collection of PDF parts (scans of standard editions) and scores for pieces that are in the public domain, all downloadable for free. If you are interested in building a library of parts, the Orchestra Musicians' CD-ROM Library (OMCDRL) is a great collection of public domain PDFs on disk at a cost that is much lower than the price of buying individual parts. There's also a website called www.everynote.com that sells PDFs of public domain parts at much lower prices than you'd pay Kalmus or Luck's to ship them to you.

Thanks SO much for your help. After checking all your suggested sources, it appears that only the study score is available and which I can make copies of the pages I need from the Los Angeles Public Library's copy.

Matius, Thank you for your kind offer. We got the rental parts from European American Music this past Sunday. Bless Michael Drapkin whose excerpt book had all the "challenges" in it. However, one really needs the full bass clarinet part to put the excerpts in perspective.

Speaking of orchestral parts, would anyone know where to get a copy of the clarinet part for the Brahms - Schoenberg: Piano Quartet? I heard it performed by the Prague Symphony Orchestra when I lived in the Czech Republic and was blown away by the clarinet part, especially the last movement. Thanks.
