Passing of the great Clarinettist Kjell-Inge Stevensson
Author: Stefan Harg

Just want to inform all clarinettist on the Board that my dear colleague , friend and co-host of the ClarinetFest 2002 Kjell-Inge Stevensson has past away today
after a very short illness.

We are quite in a shock here in Sweden since he was active both as a performer , principal clarinettist in the Swedish Radio orchestra and Professor at the University in Stockholm.
He was also a great personality and will be remembered for a long time for his fun humour , sensitive musicianship and a great colleague
I will remember him greatly both as a very supportive colleague and great friend.

Take care all

Stefan Harg

It's a sad day. I met him just three days ago at a concert. He came with his beloved granddaughter. He was in a good spirit as he had just recovered from a hernia in his throat. Apparently he died from a following thrombosis today Tuesday. My thaughts go to Margareta, their children and grand children.

R.I.P. Kjell-Inge

I met him at the Clarinet Congress in London in 1980, where he was tossing off impossible licks from the Francaix Concerto and complaining that he couldn't perform it because Guy Deplus had the exclusive rights at the time.

He was a truly great player and a huge loss. I think I have all his records, and every one of them, particularly the Nielsen Concerto, is at the top of my list. There was nothing he couldn't make sound easy.

At age 12 i fell in love with his recording of the Nielsen concerto, and this sparked a lifelong interest (obsession?) in both the Clarinet and contemporary music. During my teenage years his tone was my ideal sound. Very sad news

His recording of the Nielsen I wore out on lp very quickly..He was a great clarinetist but above all a great musician. Sad new for the clarinet fraternity.

Like Ken above I also met him at the 1980 Congress in London and of course had earlier aquired his Lp version of the Nielsen concerto. He was a modest and very approachable artist.
In the same way as Donald I was very much taken by his clean tone quality, so very different from much (not all) of what I heard around me in the UK in the 60'/70s.
Very sad to hear news of his passing.
