I have read with interest the recent postings on the Evette-Schaffer clarinets; however, everyone seems to be referring to the master model. I just purchased an E&S from E-Bay that has the insignia "Evette & Schaeffer," and "Paris, France" on the inside of the circle, and "Modelle Buffet Crampon" underneath the circle. The serial # is K1546. I have seen photos of "master model "E & S" clarinets, and this one definitely does not have the "master model" engraving.
I bought the clarinet for 255.00 after seeing some info at the Anaheim Band site that stated the E & S was basically an E-13 (which was a not-quite perfect R-13), and that the "master model" had been incorporated into the E-11 line.
My clarinet is in beautiful shape and plays much like an R-13 I played in high school and college (I sold it 15 years ago); however, I would appreciate if anyone could shed more light on the subject for me, especially regarding master model/non master model, and also the year of manufacture -- I have tried the Boosey serial # search several times, and it appears not to be working (as I have tried it with other Buffet serial #'s) -- or perhaps I'm not using it correctly? Thanks, Dave.

I also believe these to be the equivalent of the E-13, but have no basis except my own observation. I resotred a very nice one with cork pads and sold it last September. IMHO it played very much like an R-13.

I have one of the Master Model E&S clarinets with a little later K series serial number. My research indicates (from other hippies that bought them new in the mid to late 50's and early 60's) that these E & S clarinets date from the early to late 1950's. Have not gotten a definitive date from Boosey & Hawks. These seem to be quality instruments - the proof for any clarinet is in the sound and the playability. - Good luck with your new horn.

Francois Kloc mentioned these as being either "Equivalent" or the progenitor of the E13.
The french ones play nice, the newer ones have a real Germanic feel (too dark and stuffy to my ear, anyway.)
Sounds like you have a real find... best of luck!

Dave, this may clear up the question you have posed: in a Buffet Crampon brochure I have from c. 1960 is stated the following:" Instruments that embody considerable hand-craftsmanship, as do all the Buffet products, will vary slightly from instrument to instrument. Those Evette & Schaeffer Clarinets that surpass the surperb quality characteristic of all Evette & Schaeffer instruments, are set aside to comprise the ME-13 Master Model Evette & Schaeffer Clarinets."
In this same brochure the Evette & Schaeffer clarinet is listed as E-13 and the above information shows those selected to be "Master Model" became ME-13.
