 MPC list available?
Author: RoBass
Date:   2010-02-03 10:52

Dear colleagues,
please excuse my question, but I'm a clarinetist from Germany and looking for a list of mouthpieces to compare each other. In German region we don't have so much Boehm-players, and therefore we're missing data about related eqipments mostly.

Please help me with a hint to a list of mouthpiece data especially baffle, opening, volume...

It's very time consuming and uncomfortable to search a satisfiying only in the stores.-( You can test one mouthpiece-reed-combination only, and without knowledge about geometric data of MPC, you can't decide well. Now I'm searching for a list to choice the necessary test redd an easier way.

Roman

I hope someone comes up with a list for you. I had the same problem in reverse trying to find a decent German mouthpiece never having been to Germany and not speaking any German.

Vandoren has a good comparison chart for THEIR mouthpieces that you might be able to find on the web. Most charts have only the openning size and length of the lay at best. Pomarico has comparison on their website to some major brands vs. theirs that may be handy but you'll have to be familiar with the other mouthpieces for it to make sense.

As you know, there are many other factors other than just tip openning and lay length. Check out Brad Behn's website and perhaps contact him for advice. He makes very good custom mouthpieces and his information is a good starting point.

Yes, I know his site. Our home board http://www.klarinette24.de/forum/ owns a site with similar data for German mouthpiece type too. But there's no information about specific type of mouthpieces at all.

I'm missing data about table width, window measurement, baffle a.s.o. That's the matter ;-/

I visited...with help from babelfish. Seems like you have a good group over there. Can't say I've ever played a German clarinet, but I really like Sabine Meyer. She plays a Wurlitzer, right? Doesn't that use some form of a Boehm system with the German style bore? To my understanding it still requires a German style mouthpiece...

There's a discussion about Reform-Boehm and other Boehm-clarinets with German bore. Schwenck&Seggelke is an interesting manufacturer too or Hammerschmidt in Austria. Both of them are trend setters (and Wurlitzer of course;-). But most of German clarinet fabricators only do German style. I personally prefer the Boehm system, because of the more standardized handling. And now the sound comes more and more to the German style. Some German clarinetists now tend to the Vienna-Style sound. It's a typical sound but not like typical Boehm or German.

Regarding your question about mouthpiece type I would recommend to visit the sites of Selmer, Schwenck&Seggelke and Hammerschmidt. There's to feel a new trend, but not established well. The body bore and barrel bore is fitted to the German mouthpiece standard and the mechanical part is more like Boehm-system. Some gimmicks like the roll paddles, additional levers a.s.o. are transformed from German (Oehler) system to the mainly used Boehm. Therefore these clarinets are neither Boehm nor German style at all ;-)

I have this too .. an example of the Selmer Mouthpiece page. I have numerous other pages to other brands though it covers mostly vintage mouthpieces

In general I don't list the type of baffle but the pictures you can take a look. I also show the chamber shape in the pics.

This may interest you too, though not my most recent listing

Hello Steve,
do you allow to integrate your data into my table? I did a table for appr. 150 types (mostly German) already. Could I implement your sheet into? This would be a very good basic for beginners to help decide a mouthpiece choice. Common way is recommendation, but my experience shows, that a first choice could be better with a tip/measurement table.

PS: The table I will host so, that addition/correction could be made regularily. Who needs it, could get by mail as XLS (for free of course;-).

PS2: You are a well cited man in German boards ;-)
