Hail everyone. I'm a high school Junior, and first chair in my schools band. I consider it an honor, but anywho, I am going to be playing Rhapsody in Blue, the Gershwin piece, and I need help with the solo in the very beggining.
Basically my problem is this. I need to slide up from I believe a mid-b up the scale to around high g, I'm not really sure without checking the notes.
The question is on the technique of sliding notes, how is it done, what are some ways to keep it in tune, etc. I don't mean sliding as in one fingering to another, I'm talking about sliding up a scale (no note division). I'm not familiar with the technique, so any help would be appreciated. Thanks.
Note: I'm playing on an R-13 (Buffet) on Riggoti Gold 3.5 reeds, any instrument specific suggestions? Anywho thanks and I hope I get a respone.

There have been threads about doing a gliss (or glissando, or slide) before with some very good technical descriptions about just how to go about it. Do a search both in this bulletin board and in the Klarinet list area in Sneezy. It isn't hard to do, so learn the technique and have fun!

I'm also a junior and first chair. I play Ellington stuff for our school's jazz band and I've been called to do the same thing. My private lesson teacher told me a few things...
*slide all you fingers off at relatively the same time
*you have to play it LOUD.... otherwise the gliss just does't happen
*it helps him and me to move the clarinet a little... it's a little bit straighter out than you would normally play it
*just do it and don't be timid about it... there are millions of BAD recordings of Rhapsody out there because the clarinet player did it as a classical gliss -- it's definitely a jazz gliss

Thanks a lot Amanda. I'm working on the gliss and I'm getting the technique down. The volume issue was a big thing. I was trying it too slowly and not nearly loud enough. I think that I'll have it after some solid practice time. Anyway I'm really thankful for that advice.

Another tip: trick is, be able to portamento from G->C with only your thumb and the "octave" key down, and hitting it won't be a problem. You'll probably notice in your part that there's a couple notes written out before the squiggly line shows up. Once you're over the break to middle B, begin the gliss.
Get your embochure into the right state to hit that "lipped down" G from the C fingering and you should be able to slide smoothly into the downbeat.
As for sliding your fingers off, I have to look at this in a physical sense: you're trying to achieve an effect not too far off from what a slide whistle can accomplish (a gradual change in the length of the air column), so sliding off one's fingers in a graduated manner that opens up the tone holes sequentially will help smooth the transition.

Hello,
I'm studying clarinet with Steven Kanoff in Geneva, and am principal clarinetist of Geneva Symphony Orchestra... and a freelance jazz musician in Geneva and Lausanne..
I have played Rhapsodie in Blue, and have used a different technique than Amanda's for the solo in the beginning.
this is a jazz clarinetist trick..
It's difficult to explain it... but I'll do my best :
O.K. the trick.. is to be able to play a full octave without moving a finger.... The advantage of this system is to make the glissando much more impressive by making it last longer, being able to control the dynamics from pianissimo to fortissimo..
the best way to practice is to use just the mouthpiece without clarinet. Try experimenting pitch variation by moving the back of the tonghe. Try doing the same movement with the tonghe as if you were saying "hhoooooeeeeee" (moving tonghe from back to front)...
When you manage to play "God save the Queen" on your mouthpiece, you can try with the clarinet.... O.K. it's a bit special...
You will have to play a "controlled squeak"... try making volontary squeaks by using very weird fingerings (like putting half of a finger on a ring)... then... playing the squeak.. hold the note, and try playing "God save the Queen" again without moving the fingers
once you manage that, you need to practice variation on a real note.... play... a G (all fingers of left hand on the keys and none of right hand)... try playing a glissando going down to B (keeping the fingering of the G)... then once you get to that... try going back up again to the G.
Then once you manage that.... play a B (all fingers on keys), then change to the fingerings of G, changing your tonghe position to the B you played with the fingering of G.. once you get that.... it should be a piece of cake...
Good luck..
