See http://www.woodwind.org/clarinet/Equipment/HowOld/Buffet.html. Serial Number 65961 was made in early 1961. The "F" prefix means it is at European pitch, A-442, rather than American pitch, A-440. According to Guy Chadash, the only difference is that the "F" clarinets have a shorter barrel.

If a 1961 Buffet has no model name stamped on it, the instrument is an R13.

The R13s from 1961 were very good. They had some intonation problems, which you had to work to overcome, but the sound was wonderful.

By the way, there were also some student model "Sponsored by Buffet" Evettes that had serial numbers beginning with the letter F. But those were clearly marked as Evettes, and are nothing like the pro Buffets.

I certainly will not contradict Guy Chadash as my experience may just be anecdotal. Both the clarinets I've had that were 442 instruments made prior to 1975 - including an F-series Buffet - required more than just a longer barrel to tune decently at 440. Specifically, they required adjustment at both the barrel and between the joints to tune well - something none of my 440 clarinets have ever required. Again . . . could just be anecdotal.
