Hi guys!
Today somebody showed me a "SAKURA" clarinet. Does anybody nows anything about this brand? Made in Japan, China?
Hope someone has heard about this instrument!

Sounds to me like a Chinese clarinet going by a Japanese name - I can only assume it is just by pure speculation.

I looked around. It does not come up in any search in English or Japanese.
It is defiantly not Japanese.

This Sakura is a Japan clarinet, I have got one. You can buy it in a small shop.

There is no such company in this country.
The only companies that make clarinets in Japan are Yamaha, Musik Josef, and Kawai used to make clarinets until about 2 years ago.

I didn't know Kawai made woodwinds - or until only a couple of years back (I only know them as piano makers - unless that's a different Kawai). What were they like?

I have never played them, only saw them in catalogs. They didn't make anything all that special, but just students/intermediate models of clarinets, flutes, plastic recorders, etc.
They may have all been stencils from Yamaha or from China for all I know. I have never seen one in anyone's hands or even used in a store, so I guess they were not all that popular.

In German ebay were selled some Sakura named instruments (not only clarinet) in the past. All of them were "China-brands" ;-)

PS@skygardener: could you send some information about the clarinets made by Kawai and Musik Josef?! It's interesting to see any manufacturer besides the big Y.

Here are a couple of photos of the Josef clarinet. The first is from a year ago and if I remember they changed from a register vent on the side to a normal (but longer) one at the back.

Cherry blossom is called 'sakura' in Japanese, for what it's worth. The Joesf clarinet looks rather fine... is it good?

Noel,
The Josef (J pronounced as Y) clarinets are quite wonderful instruments. They are one of the nicest clarinets I have played. Very unique, but not altogether a different animal.

Very interesting posts! Thanks to you!!! Especially the Josef clarinets look very impressive and modern. Could you give a little bit more information about the manufacturer? It seems to be a German name, but why made in Japan?

AFAIK the Musik Josef clarinets are made in Japan. At their stand in Musikmesse they had both Japanese and German representatives. Maybe a strong German distributer? I don't know.
BTW the barrel inner tenon is to prevent the gap when opening the barrel for tuning. The extra mechanism of the throat A key is to use a needle spring for that key (though when actually playing I felt no difference).
I thought it was a very good clarinet.

Ok, now it's clear, where the delicate design comes from ;-) Looks very good and worthy. Do anybody know current prices for (for clarinets of course;-)?

The prices are-
Bb-
silver plate 651,000 Yen
white gold 682,500 Y
A SP 703,500Y
WG 735,000
As far as the "German" part of it. The president of the company lived in Germany for several years as a professional oboist. I don't know exactly who "Josef" is, though.

I tested now a Sakura Bb clarinet, and it was surprisingly good.
I can recommend it to everybody.
Clear tuning, beautiful sound, perfect keyboard.
My friend use Sakura clarinet to, and he is satisfied with it.
