Hi, I'm on the market to buy a new clarinet and was wondering where the best place to shop is... I live between the San Francisco Bay Area and Sacramento, and anywhere nearby either place (within three hours) that you could reccomend would be most useful.

My teacher recommended not buying an instrument from catalogs because you should have it tried out by you and a professional first.

Most if not all of the catalog companies have trial periods for clarinets; many people (assuming they have a nice limit on their credit cards) order 3 at a time and return the ones they don't like. Remember, however, that you're responsible to return them unharmed on oin time or you'll be subject to some very high charges (read the fine print!)
