 Tonguing...

I have always tongued in the same way... but now I'm realizing that it is likely incorrect.

I seem to not use the very tip of my tongue, but a centimeter or so in, and the very tip hits the inside of my bottom lip. Is this incorrect?

What is the correct tonguing? What should you feel?

First off, get the word "hit" out of your clarinet vocabulary. More important, get it out of your way of thinking when approaching any aspect of playing the clarinet. I think what you are doing would qualify as "anchor tonguing". Not many believe it to be an appropriate way to tongue on the clarinet (I use it sometimes for very rapid tonguing). the general consensus is that the tip of your tongue should touch the tip, or just below the tip of the reed.

It's easier to tell you to read my articles on tonguing in my clarinet articles page on my website so I don't have to print it all here. You are right, you should not be "hitting" your lower lip. ESP http://eddiesclarinet.com

Standard tonguing may not necessarily be the use of the very tip of the tongue. It may also not be damping the very tip of the reed. However, if your tongue is coming in contact with your lower lip every time you go to damp the reed, this MAY be incorrect.

First off everything may be better if your clarinet is at the right attitude. Angle the horn no more than 30 degrees from your body (perhaps even less) to get the best advantage of the fulcrum for your embouchure. This will then set the tip of the reed farther up away from the lower lip. If you concentrate on almost the tip of the reed, there should be no problems.

Remember: articulation is the TOUCHING of the reed with the tongue to stop the sound. You resume the sound by RELEASING the tongue from the reed.............as said above, NO HITTING!!!!
