suggestions for a piece to play with the orchestra
Author: clarionet

For my final school leaving I will be playing a piece as a soloist with the orchestra.

I would prefer it not to be the Mozart (mainly because every clarinet leaver has played that one).

Any suggestions for an alternative? I myself like the Crusell No. 3, but my teacher thinks that as he wants me to work on the Stravinsky 3 pieces as well, it might be too much to prepare: I disagree of course! He suggested the Weber Concertino because it would be easy but I would like to play something a little more challenging.

The rest of the soloists are playing from the Classical era, so it might be good to do something different.

Grateful for any help.

Alec Wilder wrote a Concerto for Clarinet--the orchestral parts are on rental from G. Schirmer. Because it is rental only, it has not received a lot of performances. Schirmer will send you the score and clarinet part to review before actually ordering the whole set.

My other suggestion might be the Copland Concerto.

Thank you for the suggestion, I shall follow it up.

The Copland would be difficult to put together as I have never played it before, the Crusell I have played by myself but never with a teacher.

The other soloists (violin, viola, 2 pianos) are going to be playing movts from Mozart and Stamitz concertos.

I think the 2 Weber concertos are more difficult than the Concertino without being as challenging as the Copland (which is very hard for both soloist and orchestra). Spohr also wrote multiple clarinet concertos, but I'm not sure where they lie on the difficulty scale.

Busoni also wrote a 10 minute Concertino which looks to be slightly harder than the Weber, and rarely played.

Thank you Nathan. Any Spohr concert you like more than the others?

I will look up the Busoni. I think they want each one to play between 10-15 minutes at most.

More suggestions welcome!. The more doable suggestions I can take to my teacher next lesson (Tuesday), the better.
