I just bought an old one piece silver clarinet. The only markings on it was "Carl Fischer" and "France". Does anyone know anything about these clarinets and where I can get a mouthpiece?

Metal clarinets take standard clarinet mouthpieces. If yours appears not to, then it might be missing the short metal "barrel."
Carl Fischer did not manufacture clarinets themselves. They contracted with a number of different companies over the years to put the Carl Fischer name on it. Sometimes the name of the original manufacturer was included on the horn along with the Carl Fischer name and at other times it was not. It would be very difficult to tell who actually made your horn. However, on the average, they tended to contract with decent companies so this is probably of reasonable quality.

I agree with Dee. The Carl Fischer clarinets I've seen were all good horns. If you don't have the barrel, try calling around to different repair techs and local collectors and try to find one that fits. The barrels used on metal clarinets vary quite a bit in size and design. One made for a Carl Fischer would be nice but you may have to get what you can find and have it modified to fit.

Fischers can vary quite a bit. Some of those instruments are terrific (I've got a wooden Fischer that I think was made by Buffet), but some are bow-wows. I own one of those, too, a hard rubber clarinet-shaped object with a case that looks 1950-ish. No idea who made this Fischer. I keep it as a curiosity, but the intonation is so bad I don't play it.
