Can you recommend an excellent clarinet "tune-up" place in Florida?

I am still on the search for one myself that would qualify as "excellent". I have several people recommend the Buffet guy (i don't know his name) in Jacksonville at Buffet USA headquarters I believe. Many even said it was awkward taking their Selmers into a buffet place.

When I lived there, I took my instrument to Saul Fromkin. Not sure if he's still with us (I hope so!), but he does VERY excellent work and has for many, many years. He worked in NY forever, then retired to the Sarasota area. If you do find him, look around his shop - he has autographed photos from people he's done repair work for: Drucker, Rollins, the list is rather impressive. If you wait while he works, be ready to hear stories about each of those photos! :-)
I miss him.

Just did a quick search on Saul Fromkin. It seems in 2005, according to a SOTW forum post, he moved to American Music in Jupiter.

In the Panhandle in NW Florida, Schmidt's Music in Pensacola has a very good repair staff available: 1-850-434-0317 or 1-800-835-6326. They have done excellent work for me on many occasions on my visits to that area.

I understand there is a major US Buffet distributor in Jacksonville that does Buffet tweaking. In fact, Brannen Woodwinds of Chicago referred me there if my R-13 required any significant tuning or intonation repair - e.g. to overcome the need to pull the barrels out 1/4" total to achieve A440.
Can anyone give advice about that facility? I sent them an email to the only address I could find - the "marketing department." I have not received a reply yet, but I will post it when they reply.

I think that the technician at Buffet in Jacksonville is Bruce Marking. In addition
to being a good tech, he is a fine clarinetist and a great guy. We played a lot of
duets when he was in graduate school here in Tallahassee.

NAPBIRT has a tech locater on it's web site. You can always ask for references should you decide to use one of the technicians listed there:

I'm sorry to report that Saul Fromkin passed away on August 12, 2009. He was a great guy and a very talented repairman.
Roberto Romeo of Roberto's Winds in New York City was his protegé and would have more information.

Thanks, Steve. That's very sad news, indeed. However, not a shock because of his age when I met him ten or eleven years ago. Thanks for the update, and if anyone in NY is looking for a repairman, I'm sure Robert learned a lot from Saul during the 15+ years he was apprenticing under him.

jbutler is probably right. I know several people who have taken horns there and are very satisfied with the work. I do not know the number or persons name who does the work though. If you are really interested I can ask around and figure out the name.
