I'm in the market for a new R-13 and poking around on sneezy, I've found an interesting (and a bit concerning) article(http://www.sneezy.org/clarinet/Equipment/Intonation.html#r13).
I realize that simply because of limitations on manufacturing accuracy, etc, there can be "problems" with intonation or tuning for certain note(s). How prevalent are these problems among R-13's if the included barrel and mpc are used? It sounds like most of the intonation problems can be solved by a particular barrel/mcp combo. As an addiitonal question, what is the general consensus on the "quality" of the mpcs/barrels that come with a new horn? It seems like most people I know have immediately mothballed the included mpc/barrel when they got new horns and purchaced new "high quality" ones. Is it a matter of personal opinion to not use the included mps/barrels or is the overall quality of the sound actually increased by buying a new set?

The R-13 I am currently using does have intonation problems. However, the tone quality is superb and I am very happy with it.
The mouthpiece of any pro clarinet is usually discarded because it is a piece of crap. I wouldn't use my Buffet mouthpiece even if I was forced to! The Buffet barrel works for some, but not for me. I use the Moennig barrel because it gives me the best tone.
I believe that buying a new mpc and barrel will significantally improve your tone quality once you are used to your pro horn. You need to find the right combo that makes you happy and gives you the best tone quality and intonation.

I have an R-13 and am very happy with it. I have had no tuning problems at all and use the barrel that came with it. I have never actually tried the mouthpiece that came with it. I know the mouthpiece that I use with it can have a tendency to be a little sharp but I can usually correct that with my embouchure.
That's not to say I'll never try another barrel, just that my current setup works for now.

I just had my R13 overhauled and the tuning improved immensely. It still has it's odd notes, but for the most part is REALLY even.
Some of it comes down to luck- some will play perfectly in tune, others never...
I LOVE my clarinet. I have yet to play one that I like more.

R-13's I've tried seem to have wide 12th's from E2 to B3 as well as flat third register F and F#. A good clarinet tuner(ala Clark Fobes) could probably raise a flat E2 some without affecting the B3 by undercutting that tone hole. The flat high F and F# can be played sharper by tightening the embouchure or else by using alternate fingerings. If you are in unison with others, you have to go with the crowd any way you can.
