My wife was listening and said..........."ugh, that sounds like an exercise."

I was doubled on the floor laughing.

Hi Paul,
No piece of music, nor anyone's playing, will strike the fancy of all listeners. The second Rose Etude has specific technical difficulties that it addresses. I believe that John Walker's piano part helps this very "exercise sounding" etude sound much less so.

Sorry Chris,

Don't mean that as any comment on your playing or that of the accompanist at ALL !!!

It just struck me after a singer's comment on auditing that no matter what you do to the Rose (albeit a VERY good exercise indeed - Bonade found them to have all what one needs to be a fine orchestral musician) etudes, they sound like etudes.

I'm sure the accompaniment is a welcome change of pace after YEARS of playing them without.

I'm not familiar with the piano accompaniments, but I'm very intrigued! Who wrote them, who published them, and where can I get them? (And I assume we're talking about the 32 Etudes, not the 40, yes?)

Hi Nat,

Since you asked, Carl Fischer has recently reissued the Melvin Warner edition of the Rose 32. Included with the book is a CD containing mp3 audio recordings of all 32 piano accompaniments, plus pdf files of the scores which may be printed out and performed. It is now widely available in music stores and online retailers. Hope you like them.
