My house was burglarized, and I lost my metal Pedler bass clarinet, to my great sadness. Now I have to declare its value for insurance purposes, and I don't have much of a clue. It said "Harry Pedler & Sons" on the bell, and the serial number is 11252. It was quite a nice horn with a fine sound in the middle register. I still have the case.
I still have hope for finding the horn, since it is so rare. In my foolish youth I had a repairman drill a hole in the top of the neck and attach a brass fitting for an electronic pickup.
Any idea how I could begin to come up with a value for the horn?
Thanks

oh goodness...Sorry for the loss....Personally I have no idea of the cost but are you looking for "value" or the replacement cost?

I have to list a value on my insurance forms, which I suppose comes down to replacement cost. But it would obviously take some doing to replace a vintage metal bass clarinet. I'm not even sure how to think about the value. I just wish it would pop up somewhere, and I could get it back.
I guess I have to place some kind of book value on the horn.

Check on (I hate to say it!) eBay under 'completed auctions' -- there have been a few Pedler metal bass clarinets sold in the past year. That might give you some idea of market value. There is no "book" to give you a "book value".

Thanks. Good idea. I looked at current auctions, but didn't realize you could look at completed ones.

I know there's no current equivalent, but what would be the price of a new pro model bass to low Eb?
Most insurance companies will have a new-for-old policy whereby you insure your clarinets for the current market price of the same or equivalent model.
But this has its drawbacks as how can you put a value on an early MkVI or SBA in mint condition, or a full Boehm Centered Tone - and the same with your metal bass? These aren't replaceable with anything currently on the market, but should be valued so if you do need to replace it, then you should insure it so if you do find one, you'll have enough to get it with.
I think the best thing to do is look up the price of a Buffet, Leblanc, Selmer and Yamaha low Eb bass (pro model Buffet and Leblanc) and then work out the average price.

I never even heard of a metal bass clarinet, I've lived a shelterer life. Call all the pawn shops in your area and let them know it was stolen or ask the police to send out a notice to them all. It should be easy to identify. ESP http://eddiesclarinet.com

I did see one recently on THAT site that sold for almost $2000 I think. Forgot to mention that but I doubt it adds anything to this convo at all.

To Ed --- I'm surprised! I know of at least three metal bass clarinets in the DC Metro/Baltimore area (I have one of them). It's hard to believe you haven't seen at least a few in your long career.
There have been a few metal alto clarinets (mostly Pedlers) on THAT site as well, but I've never seen one in person.

Value it at $1500 (or more).
The Pedler metal altos come up a lot more often, and even a remotely restorable carcass will go for $300 on the auction site. It's been a while since I've seen a Pedler metal bass go at auction and I don't remember what it went fo but it was definitely four figures. And that was a Pedler (not a Harry Pedler) -- I'd guess that a Harry Pedler is more desirable.

Here are notes on BBb metal clarinet auctions on Ebay since fall 2002. I'm sure I have missed some, especially in recent years. Most, if not all, needed work. The cheap ones were junkers. The one good Pedler went for close to a thousand. A good rebuild costs $500. My experience is that even ones listed as rebuilt often need substantial work. From the prices, you can see that many other bidders feel the same way. At a minimum, I would assert that the replacement cost of the horn is $1300. Do you have the serial number? Many on this list would be willing to watch for it on Ebay

Patrick, I've never seen a metal bass for sale anywhere except online, but I hope the bleep who stole yours gets caught and you get it back. I put the serial number on my flea market "hot sheet" and hope that others who frequent the bottom-feeders' markets will do the same.

Jim,
I have managed to find a number of your past eBay surveys for metal clarinets ('01-'05). Do you have any more? Do you have a list? Do you have a spreadsheet?
I'm restoring some metal clarinets and I've been doing some of my own research lately and have been adding your information to what I have collected. Any help would be appreciated.
Thanks.
