Does anyone have any relatively recent knowledge about Leon Lester (4th and bass clarinetist on the Philadelphia Orchestra until 1966 or so, when Ron Reuben followed him)? Does anyone know, if he is no longer living, when he died? A Google search only turns up articles about his etude books.

He is for sure dead, but I'm not sure of the year. When I studied with him in the late 70's, he was already in his 80's (or at least he sure looked it).
I do remember a former student of mine (adult who had studied with Leon also) mentioning that he had passed away.
Can't find anything about it though online.

I agree with David. I met a cousin of his several years ago and he told me that Leon had passed. ESP http://eddiesclarinet.com

You might try going to www.rootsweb.com or www.worldvitalrecords.com.
From these sites, you can access the Social Security Death Index. There are several Leon Lesters listed, but perhaps the one you're looking for lived from 1910 to 2003.
