My very elderly father has what appears to be a fairly old clarinet. I know absolutely nothing about musical instruments. He wants me to sell this clarinet for him. Can someone out there please, please help me out? It says: Evette Sponsored by Buffet, Made in Paris, France and then there is a number, K1682. Can anyone tell me something about this clarinet that would help me to sell it half-way intelligently? The only other thing is that it looks to be in the original case, probably leather lined in red velvet with another little box inside that I thought might hold reeds. I do know that he just had the pads replaced and the cork appears to be in good condition. I am trying to get some idea of what it is worth. Thank you.

It sounds like an old Master Modele since the serial number starts with a "K". These are very fine clarinets. I have the understanding that they are R-13 "seconds". Look at the trademark on the upper joint and see if you see "Master Modele" stamped under the logo. Now, as far as value is concerned I just bought one if fairly good shape for $250. Yours may be worth well more than that. I suggest you take it to a local music store and have it appraised.

These clarinets were generally used as student models for beginner clarinetists. Only a good reputable music dealer could give you an estimate as to its worth because it would depend a lot upon what reconditioning (if any) it would need. After you find out a reasonable value a good time to sell it would be in the early summer months just before beginners start looking for used horns to buy. Advertise in your local paper. Ask for a price, but be willing to negotiate. Request that their band director look it over to ascertain if you are asking a fair price because the costs of new horns are astronomical these days.
