 Sore Lip with a Difference
Author: Rusty
Date:   2009-12-09 04:38

The Port side of my lip gets very sore. This is the lip itself and is not being teeth bitten it is just contact with the reed. The lip is tender from some ancient surgery from sun exposure. I smooth over cane surfaces and edges and use Legeres sometimes. The clarinet is easy blown and I`m on a very soft reed.
My quetion is has anybody come up with any lip protection or anyway of toughening the lip with e.g. tannin? I can`t get cig. paper to stay in place.

I'm not sure how you'd go about strengthening what is effectively scar tissue - it will always have a different texture and density to the normal skin around it.

Are you able to play with the mouthpiece off to one side?

I would talk to a dermatologist about it. It may be possible to have some of the scar tissue removed.

Do not continue to aggravate this problem....get medical attention.
